Remote ID requirements for Part 107 pilots
Understand FAA Remote ID requirements for Part 107 drone operations, including Standard Remote ID, broadcast modules, FRIAs, and Part 107 registration details.
Drones that are required to be registered or are registered generally must comply with the FAA Remote ID rule. Common compliance paths are a Standard Remote ID drone, an approved Remote ID broadcast module, or operation within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area when the applicable conditions are met.
Most registered Part 107 drones must comply with Remote ID
The FAA states that drones required to be registered, or that are registered, must comply with Remote ID. That includes business and other Part 107 operations unless a specific exception or authorization applies.
There are three common Remote ID compliance paths
A Standard Remote ID drone has the broadcast capability built in. A Remote ID broadcast module can retrofit a drone that does not have Standard Remote ID. A third pathway is operation within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area, or FRIA, under the conditions that apply to those sites.
- Operate a Standard Remote ID drone.
- Operate with an FAA-compliant Remote ID broadcast module.
- Operate within a FRIA when the flight and aircraft meet the FRIA requirements.
Part 107 registration is device-specific
For Part 107 operations, each aircraft is registered individually. When Remote ID applies, the FAA registration inventory includes the applicable Standard Remote ID or broadcast-module serial number for the device.
Remote ID is one requirement, not the entire operating rule set
Remote ID compliance does not replace Part 107 certification, airspace authorization, registration, operating limitations, or other flight-specific requirements. Treat it as one part of the complete compliance picture.
Frequently asked questions
Do Part 107 drones need Remote ID?
In general, drones that are required to be registered or are registered must comply with the FAA Remote ID rule unless an allowed exception or authorization applies.
Can I add Remote ID to an older drone?
An FAA-compliant Remote ID broadcast module can be used to retrofit certain drones that do not have Standard Remote ID built in, subject to the operating conditions that apply to broadcast-module use.
What is a FRIA?
A FRIA is an FAA-Recognized Identification Area where drones without Remote ID equipment may be operated under the conditions established for that area, including visual-line-of-sight requirements.
